Reports Updated for June 2020
Gulf of Mexico
Red snapper season opens this month, but there are different dates for charter boats and for private boats so watch your regulations! This fishery is good for anglers willing to make lengthy offshore runs since consistent catches of these deep-water fish usually begin at around 140 feet of water, 50 miles or more offshore. Nearer to shore, the fishing for red grouper begins in as little as 60 feet of water and the reds are joined by a mix of lane snapper, vermilion snapper, porgys and other reef fish. Gags are our other popular grouper and since gag season opened June 1 also, anglers now have twice as many grouper to catch! Wrecks and artificial reefs in as little as 40 feet of water are holding permit, barracuda, some really nice mangrove snapper, and huge Goliath grouper. There are still some kings in the area too, though they are scattered.
